Implant Placement Fundamentals
If you are ready to begin placing implants in your own practice but want a calm, structured environment to build that confidence, this two-day workshop gives you a repeatable protocol and genuine hands-on experience before you ever treat a patient independently.

Service description
A two-day workshop designed for dentists who are ready to begin placing implants in their own practice. The course moves at a deliberate pace: morning sessions cover anatomy, treatment planning, and case selection; afternoon sessions move to the bench and then to supervised placement on simulation models. Participants leave with a clear, repeatable protocol they can follow confidently from day one.
Who this course is built for
This workshop is designed specifically for general dentists who have not yet placed implants independently. You do not need prior surgical implant experience — the course starts from the foundations and builds gradually, so you are never asked to attempt a step before it has been fully explained and demonstrated.
Dentists at any stage of their career find value here. Whether you graduated recently or have been in practice for years and simply never took the implant path, you will be welcomed without any assumption about what you already know. The pace is deliberate by design, not by accident.
What the two days look like
Morning sessions focus on the knowledge you need before you touch an instrument: anatomy relevant to implant placement, biomechanics, treatment planning principles, and how to select appropriate cases for a new implant provider. These sessions are conversational — questions are encouraged at any point, and no topic is treated as too basic to revisit.
Afternoon sessions move to the bench. You begin on typodont models to develop feel and confidence with the surgical sequence, then progress to supervised placement on fresh-tissue pig jaw models. By the end of day two you will have completed multiple placements under direct instructor guidance, with feedback given in real time rather than at the end of the session.
Everything included in your registration
Before the course begins, you receive access to a self-paced online anatomy review module — approximately three hours of content you can work through at your own pace in the weeks leading up to the workshop. Arriving with that foundation already in place means the in-room time can be spent on technique rather than theory review.
During the course you receive a comprehensive course manual and work through a digital treatment-planning software walkthrough. When you leave, you take a post-course clinical checklist that gives you a clear, step-by-step reference for your first cases back in practice. Nothing is left vague or assumed.
CE credits and professional recognition
The 16-hour workshop is approved for 16 CE credits recognized by the Royal College of Dental Surgeons and provincial dental associations across Canada. You can attend knowing the time you invest counts toward your continuing education requirements.
Beyond the formal credit, the course is structured so that the skills you develop are immediately applicable. The protocol you leave with is not theoretical — it is the same sequence your instructor uses in clinical practice, adapted into a format that a dentist placing their first implant can follow with confidence.
Pricing and registration options
Registration is available at an early rate for those who book at least six weeks before the course date, a standard rate, and a reduced alumni rate for dentists who have previously attended a Garvey Oral Surgery course. Booking early is worthwhile both to secure your place and to take advantage of the lower rate.
Groups are kept to a maximum of eight participants per workshop. This is not a marketing claim — it is a structural decision that ensures every person in the room gets direct time with the instructor. Once a cohort is full, registration closes, so early booking is worthwhile.
How to prepare and what to expect on arrival
The pre-course anatomy module is your most important preparation step. Working through it before you arrive means you will recognise the structures being discussed during the morning didactic sessions and can focus your attention on the clinical reasoning rather than learning terminology from scratch.
On the day, wear comfortable clothes suitable for lab work. All instruments, models, and materials are provided — you do not need to bring anything other than your questions. The facility in Red Deer includes a fully equipped surgical simulation lab and dedicated implant planning suite, so the environment you practise in closely reflects a real clinical setting.
