I had been nervous about placing my first implant for two years. After the Fundamentals course I placed three in my first week back. The small group size made all the difference — Sandra watched my technique and corrected a grip issue I had no idea I was doing. Worth every dollar.

The Periodontal Certificate Program is the best CE investment I have made in 12 years of practice. Marcus explains the reasoning behind every decision, not just the technique. The between-module case calls kept me accountable and gave me somewhere to bring my real questions.

Dr. Aisha M.Periodontal Surgery Certificate Program

I drove up from Calgary for the CBCT course and it was absolutely worth the trip. Priya is an excellent teacher — she makes a complex topic feel manageable. I now read my own scans with confidence instead of just forwarding them to a radiologist for everything.

Why us

Why dentists across Alberta choose Garvey Oral Surgery

We do not rush. We do not move on until everyone is ready. And when the course is over, we stay available — because the real questions often come up once you are back in your own practice.

Small groups, real attention

With a maximum of 8 participants per workshop, you are never lost in a crowd. The instructor knows your name, watches your technique, and gives you feedback that is specific to you — not generic tips delivered to a room of 30.

Unhurried, step-by-step pace

We do not move on until everyone in the room is comfortable. If a technique takes longer to click for you, we stay with it. There is no pressure to keep up with a fixed schedule at the expense of genuine understanding.

Central Alberta location

Red Deer sits midway between Calgary and Edmonton, making it an easy drive for dentists from across Alberta. Most participants arrive the evening before and leave after the final session without needing a long-distance flight.

Practical, next-day applicable skills

Every course is built around what you will actually do in your practice on Monday morning. We focus on protocols that work in a general dental setting, not just in a specialist's referral centre.

Ongoing support after the course

Learning does not stop when you leave the building. Every participant has access to a post-course case consultation call within 90 days, and our coaching program is available for dentists who want structured mentorship as they begin new procedures.

CE credits recognized across Canada

All courses carry CE credits recognized by provincial dental associations. You can apply your hours toward annual CE requirements regardless of which province you are licensed in.

Clinical questions answered by working surgeons

When is a dentist genuinely ready to start placing implants, and what is the biggest mistake new placers make?

Readiness is less about years in practice and more about having a solid foundation in surgical extraction, flap management, and reading a CBCT. A dentist who is comfortable with a surgical extraction and can visualize three-dimensional anatomy on a scan is in a much better position than one who has been in practice for 20 years but has avoided surgery. The most common mistake new placers make is choosing cases that are too difficult too early — a narrow ridge, a posterior maxilla with a low sinus, or a patient with significant bone loss. Starting with straightforward cases in the anterior mandible, where the anatomy is forgiving and the bone is dense, builds the muscle memory and confidence that carries over to harder cases later. Patience in case selection in the first 6 months pays dividends for the rest of a career.

How should a general dentist think about the decision to treat a periodontal case in-house versus referring to a specialist?

The honest answer is that most general dentists can safely manage a wider range of periodontal cases than they currently do — but the decision should always be driven by the complexity of the anatomy, not by the desire to keep the fee in-house. Cases involving furcation involvement beyond Class I, significant vertical bone loss, or patients with poorly controlled systemic conditions that affect healing are generally better managed by a periodontist. Where general dentists can add real value is in early-to-moderate disease: osseous resection in straightforward posterior sites, connective tissue grafting for isolated recession defects, and crown lengthening for restorative purposes. The key is having a clear referral threshold in your mind before you start — and communicating openly with the patient about why you are referring when you do.

What does the evidence actually say about socket preservation grafting — is it always worth doing after an extraction?

The evidence supports socket preservation as a meaningful intervention when implant placement is planned but will be delayed by 3 months or more, particularly in the aesthetic zone or in sites with thin buccal bone. In those situations, grafting demonstrably reduces the amount of ridge resorption that occurs during healing and can simplify the subsequent implant surgery. Where the evidence is less compelling is in the posterior mandible with thick buccal bone and no planned delay — in those cases, the socket often heals with adequate volume without grafting. The practical takeaway is to think about socket preservation as a site-specific decision: consider the anatomy, the planned timing of implant placement, and the aesthetic demands of the site, rather than applying it universally to every extraction.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know which course is right for me?

Contact us and we will have a short conversation about your current experience level and what you want to be able to do in your practice. We will recommend the most appropriate course honestly — including telling you if we think you should start with something more foundational before a more advanced offering.

How far in advance should I register?

Courses fill quickly because of the small group sizes (maximum 8 participants). We recommend registering at least 6 weeks in advance to secure your preferred date and to qualify for the early registration rate.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations made more than 30 days before the course date receive a full refund. Cancellations between 15 and 30 days receive a credit toward a future course. Cancellations within 14 days are non-refundable, but you may transfer your registration to a colleague.

Are courses run on weekdays or weekends?

Most courses are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays so that participants do not need to close their practice. Some multi-day courses run Friday to Sunday. The course calendar shows exact dates for each offering.

Do you offer group rates for practices that want to send multiple dentists?

Yes. Groups of 3 or more dentists from the same practice receive a discounted rate on most courses. Contact us to arrange group registration and we will confirm the applicable pricing.

Are meals and accommodation included?

Lunch and refreshments are provided on all full-day and multi-day courses. Accommodation is not included, but we maintain a list of nearby hotels at various price points that we share with registered participants.

Can I get CE credits if I am licensed in a province other than Alberta?

Yes. Our CE credits are recognized by provincial dental associations across Canada. We recommend confirming with your own provincial association if you have any specific reporting requirements.

What if I have a question after the course is over?

Every participant receives a complimentary post-course case consultation call, available within 90 days of completing any course. For ongoing support, the Practice Integration Coaching program provides structured mentorship over 3 months.

Is there a minimum number of participants required for a course to run?

Yes, courses require a minimum of 3 registered participants to proceed. If a course does not reach this minimum, registered participants are offered a transfer to the next available date or a full refund.

Can I arrange a private or in-practice course for my team?

Yes. We offer private course delivery for groups of 4 or more dentists from the same organization. Contact us to discuss the scope, dates, and pricing for a customized private session.

Ready to take the next step in your surgical practice?
